Survival guide to the festive holidays
By Yasmin Vassiliou
With dark wintery nights ahead it’s no wonder you can feel down
– check out our survival guide to the holidays for tips and advice
to make them as enjoyable as possible:
Christmas
A time for the family but for some having your parents embarrass
you or simply eating too much turkey and stuffing is a step to far
– here are a few pointers to keep you in the festive mood:
- If you don’t have much money, try making cards or presents that
you can give to people instead, it shows you put thought and time
into their gift
- Don’t have enough money to go out with your mates after buying
loads of
- prezzies? Why not invite them round to yours to swop
embarrassing Christmas stories!
- To avoid that stuffed feeling, try and leave gaps between the
constant eating and go for a walk or bike ride in between – this
also gives you an excuse to get time out from the family too.
New Year
Feel like everyone else is celebrating and you’re stuck feeling
depressed about the year you just had? Life’s what you make it, so
make it good:
- Can’t afford or want to go out? Throw a party instead, make it
fun and quirky, but not too hard to organise – it doesn’t have to
be expensive either – ask everyone to bring drink, food, games or
music – but don’t forget to ask permission!
- Instead of resolutions, why not write a list of ten things you
want to achieve by the end of the year and each time you achieve
something, reward yourself!
Valentines
Worried you’ll be the only one that doesn’t receive a Valentines
card? Try these and see if they help make a difference:
- Get all your mates to send secret cards to each other stating
why they love you as a mate and then try and guess who sent who the
cards.
- If you don’t give, you may not receive, so why not send someone
you like a card you never know you may get one in return!
- Valentines day is all about the people you love, so tell your
family and friends that you love them – you may be surprised how
good it will make you feel!
If you are feeling down, remember it’s good to talk to your
mates or family but if you
can’t, you can always call Child Line on 0800 11 11 or Thanet
